August Surf Activities in Santa Teresa

Kids, Pros, and Big Waves in Santa Teresa

August was a busy month for surfing in Santa Teresa. We held our children’s surf workshop, which we usually do two or three times a year. Then we had the pleasure of hosting one of the stops on the Alas Global Tour, which featured professional surfers from across the Americas.

The competition took place over the weekend of August 28-31, with events in many different categories. Without further ado, let’s talk about these two activities in detail.

Workshop for Girls and Boys

In an event organized by the Santa Teresa Surf Show, around 50 children participated in a free surfing workshop. Local surf instructors volunteered to teach the workshop and local businesses supported the show with snacks and even a piñata for the children.

For many, this was their first contact with surfing. In addition, surfboards were collected from locals, and many children took one home with them. Another activity like this is being planned for December by the Malpais and Santa Teresa Surf Association.

Activities of this type are becoming more common around the area. The idea is to promote local talent and turn the area into a national surfing powerhouse. In addition, the sport keeps boys and girls away from drugs, gangs, and other scourges that affect young people.

ALAS Global Tour Date

The Latin American Association of Professional Surfers held its eighth event on the ALAS Global Tour circuit. This competition was not only attended by Latin American surfers. Athletes from Canada, the United States, and Germany also participated.
It is worth noting that the Peruvians swept almost all categories, with a few exceptions.
The categories of the surf tournament and their respective winners were:

  • Men’s Sup Surf: Tamil Martino (Peru)

  • Women’s Open Shortboard: Candelaria Resano (Guatemala)

  • Men’s Open Shortboard: Sam Reidy (Costa Rica)

  • Under-14 Shortboard: Kailani Vincensini (Peru)

  • Women’s Open Longboard: Delilah Hutchins (United States)

  • Girls Under 18 Shortboard: Brianna Barthelmess (Peru)

  • Girls Under 14 Shortboard: Brianna Barthelmess (Peru)

  • Boys Under 18 Shortboard: Alejandro Bernales (Peru)

  • Men’s Open Longboard: Julian Schweizer (Uruguay)

The event was very exciting, and there was a great sense of camaraderie among the participants.
Noteworthy was the participation of local talents from Santa Teresa: Dencell Reyes, who came in third in the Under-18 Shortboard category, and Rebel Ann Beck, who came in fourth in the Under-14 Shortboard category. Our neighbor from Limon, Mikela Castro, came in second in the Under-14 Shortboard category.
